Abstract of the Association's history
In May 1994, Swiss University and Swiss space industry representatives founded the Association Pro ISSI committed to the creation of an international centre for space sciences in Switzerland that offers scientists from all over the world the opportunity to discuss and jointly interpret the results of their research activities. This led to the foundation of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) with its registered office in Bern. ISSI commenced its activities under the direction of Prof. Johannes Geiss, formerly headmaster of the University of Bern and Director of the Physical Institute. ISSI is sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Swiss Confederation, the Canton Bern and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).
After the successful implementation of the Association's first main objective, that was the foundation of ISSI, Pro ISSI continued to focus on its second main objective of securing knowledge transfer between science and the interested public.
