Twentieth Anniversary of ISSI
Two decades ago, after several years of preparation, a group of Swiss scientists around Johannes Geiss started a new institute of a kind that had not existed before in the field of space science: ISSI. They had been successful in finding a location with the help of the Canton and University of Bern, in securing funding from the Swiss Confederation, and in convincing ESA to match these contributions with its own funding. In January 1995 ISSI was formally established as a foundation under Swiss law, in May its operation was started with three employees in a basement office at the University of Bern, in September it could move to its current premises on Hallerstrasse, and in November the first Workshop (The Heliosphere in the Local Interstellar Medium) was held, concluded by the first ISSI dinner and inaugural address by Sir Herman Bondi.
In order to commemorate these events ISSI will issue a special edition of its annual report with a dedicated section on its genesis and development since then. The high point of this anniversary will be a symposium on 22-23 October, 2015, at which some key elements of ISSI will be highlighted by eight invited speakers. Some 100+ guests are expected at the symposium, which will be concluded by the traditional ISSI Dinner.

Report on Workshop "IPCC AR5: Lessons learnt for Climate Change Research and WCRP"

WCRP is one of the main contributors to climate research assessed by WGI and for certain aspects by WGII. It is therefore essential for WCRP to take stock of key scientific issues identified in the course of the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and to review WCRP's future research plans in this context. The purpose is to learn from the relevant authors of the IPCC AR5 and find future strategies for effective and exciting climate change research. The Workshop was held from 8 to 10 September 2014 at ISSI.
