GOALS

Given the breadth and the potentially ground-breaking scientific return from this project, a large XMM-Newton observing proposal team (24 CoIs from 5 European countries, 6 from the US, one from Japan) has been assembled, encompassing experts from all relevant fields including data analysis and interpretation. Care has been taken to also include a healthy number of young researchers and PhD students. If such a large international project is to succeed, a well-defined organisational structure with regular team meetings is indispensable. To this end, an ISSI International Team was set up as the steering body, largely identical with the already formed observing XMM-Newton + CFHT project groups. The science goals will be addressed by several specific subteams during the coming 2-3 years. The activities at ISSI will play the central role of coordinating the projects that are centered on the XMM-Newton observations, but including complementary aspects from other wavelengths. ISSI Team meetings will bring together the collaborators in each subteam, provide the necessary forum for exchange of information and new results, and will provide the basis for agreements on data reduction, science preparations, data interpretation, and follow-up activities. The project will continue throughout the next years according to the discussions and agreements defined at the meetings at ISSI. We envisage the following schedule for our project:
A) 2004-2005: CFHT survey is being continued; XMM-Newton survey starts obtaining data in August. A subteam of X-ray data analysts studies data analysis procedures using archival data (May-September). Continuation using real TMC data until March 2005.
B) January 19/20/21, 2005: 1st ISSI Team Meeting: Discussions of data analysis strategies, input catalog issues (source lists to be considered), a first discussion on XMM-Newton results, a review of the CFHT and Spitzer surveys, reports on the ongoing Chandra Orion survey, and agreements on future tasks.
C) 2005: All XMM-Newton observations obtained; CFHT survey concludes. Spitzer IR survey will be conducted in spring. First half of the year mostly devoted to data analysis and early interpretation.
D) July 6/7/8, 2005: 2nd ISSI Team Meeting. This meeting concentrates on the scientific discussion of a large sample of secured data, and its initial scientific interpretation. A selection of topics will obtain special attention. First scientific highlights will be discussed, and publications planned.
E) Winter 2005/06: 3rd ISSI Team Meeting. With all data in hand and analyzed (according to plan), survey results, statistical catalogs, scientific highlights will be reviewed. Agreements on follow-up work and observations, publication agreements, subteam tasks. The team continues to collaborate according to the agreements, until all relevant material has been published.
