Present and Past Activity of the Galactic Center Super-massive Black Hole and its Impact on the Galaxy Central Molecular Zone

Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate the present and recent past behaviour of the super-massive black hole at the center of our galaxy.

On one side we intend to pursue the effort of understanding the origin and mechanisms of its flaring activity, observed in X-rays and infrared wavelengths. On the other we will re-evaluate the hypothesis, supported by observations of the X-ray emission from the surrounding molecular clouds, that this peculiar object underwent a phase of high activity in X and hard X-rays few hundred years back.

The role of the black hole in accelerating the particles seen to populate the central region of the Galaxy will also be explored and the link with its past X-ray activity and other specific phenomena observed in the galactic center region will be studied.
