Schedule of Project

The team will meet twice in Bern:
Once for one week in autumn 2016, and then in early summer 2017.

The following activities will be carried out:
I. Preparations before the 1st Team Meeting:
1. Analysis of one common data set by the various groups
1.1 Selection of three data sets from HMI, MDI, and GONG for analysis
1.2 Meridional flow estimates with time-distance helioseismology and, global helioseismology, and supergranulation tracking

2. Creation of artificial data sets for validation purposes
2.1 Full sphere hydrodynamic numerical simulations of wave advection by a meridional flow with various flow configurations:
– single-cell meridional flow and multi-cellular meridional flow

1st Team Meeting:
– Presentation of methods used
– Compare results from common datasets
– Discussion on origin of systematic effects and noise impact
– Discussion of further comparison work
o Requirements on numerical simulations
o Requirements on instrumental knowledge

II. Preparation before the 2nd Team Meeting:
1. Setup of improved numerical simulations
1.1. Implementation of systematic effects
1.2. Inclusion of realistic noise properties
2. Re-Analysis of selected data sets
3. Analysis of 21 years of helioseismic data by the team members

2nd Team Meeting:
– Discussion of updated results
– Conclusions on meridional flow measurements
– Preparation of long-term data set for studying temporal variation
– Discussion of temporal evolution of meridional flow
– Relation of meridional flow variations with variation of differential rotation and solar activity.
