1. Asymmetries in plasma sheet pitch angle distributions can tell us about the sources of the various particle populations in the plasma sheet.
 
2. Cold protons seen under northward IMF appear to have a magnetosheath source, while cold electrons are almost always present and are more likely to be ionospheric in origin.
