OBJECTIVES and STRUCTURE

The meeting will focus on the relationship between a planet’s evolution and the evolution of habitability on that planet.  In this sense, the workshop will add a new dimension to the current focus of astrobiological studies by assessing not only the probability that unicellular life ever did or still does exist on Mars but also by focusing on the long-term habitability of any terrestrial-like planet.  Additionally, the workshop has the distinction of being truly interdisciplinary in nature, intimately weaving geologic, atmospheric, geophysical, magnetospheric, and biological planetary studies together.  To this end, we are inviting both a biologist and a geoscientist to serve as co-chairs for each session and are inviting scientists from many different fields to participate and give talks.

As the final outcome of the workshop will be the publication of a volume in the ISSI Space Science Series, we have organized the workshop sessions around the chapters of the book.  These chapters include the following: 1) Definition of habitability: Fundamental requirements for life, 2) The link between crustal processes and habitability, 3) Habitability during the Heavy Bombardment, 4) The link between volatiles/atmospheres and habitability 5) The link between internal planetary evolution and habitability, 6) Planetary/Sun Interactions, and 7) Habitability in our Solar System beyond Mars.  We feel that this book will serve as an extremely useful reference for upcoming international missions focused on the search for life and biomarkers on Mars and other bodies and on the understanding of planetary evolution and habitability.

PARTICIPATION

Participation in all ISSI workshops is by invitation only.  The Mars European Geophysical network (MAGE >>), funded by the European Union, is also sponsoring the participation in this workshop of 3 young scientists involved in that program.
