Workshop Topic:
The workshop on ‘The
Evolution of Mars’ is intended to provide an interdisciplinary forum
aimed
at understanding the way in which
the planet Mars has evolved from its birth to the present day. It will
aim to synthesise the most recent
geological, geophysical and geochemical evidence and combine
observations from martian meteorites
with those from spacecraft. As such it will be a timely precursor
to space missions aimed at sample
return from the red planet. The workshop will review the present state
of the radiometric and cratering
chronology of the solar system with special emphasis on Mars. The
meeting will then focus on two aspects.
An attempt will be made to understand the development of surface
features through time and to link
these to the internal structure, composition and dynamics. Secondly the
history of the martian atmosphere
and hydrosphere will be evaluated from a combination of geological
and geochemical observations and
theories.
