Formation of Cyclotron Lines in Neutron Star
Accretion Columns
Abstract
We propose a series of two team meetings at ISSI with the aim of
summarizing current studies on the formation of cyclotron lines in
neutron star accretion columns. Observations of these lines provide
the only direct way to measure the magnetic fields of neutron stars,
which are an important ingredient for our understanding of neutron
star evolution and the interaction of neutron stars with their
environment. The aim of the meetings is to provide a census of
existing cyclotron line source data, to agree on an analysis
strategy for unpublished data from these sources, to compare
different numerical models for cyclotron line formation, and to
compare these numerical models with selected observational data.
