MEETING SUMMARY

The main objectives of the second team meeting were (1) to examine the theoretical and modeling studies of the chemistry related to Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) in the atmosphere, and (2) to define the ground-based or balloon instruments necessary to study the TLEs in association with the various space missions. In particular, we have reviewed the COBRAT long-duration balloon project and determined the set of instruments that could be flown on these balloons.

As detailed in the attached agenda, presentations have been made on:

All presentations are available in a protected area of the team ISSI website.

.

The team discussions led to a successful definition of the COBRAT balloon project. The team agreed unanimously to hold a third meeting, probably early in 2011. Several actions have been defined, to be performed before this last team meeting.

Conclusions

The following conclusions, and associated actions, were decided for the next team meeting:

·            As there is overlapping interest in both team, hold the 3rd team meeting at the same time as Dr A. Seppäla team meeting, if feasible. Dr E. Turunen belongs to both team and will take care of the coordination.

·            Define priority scientific topics of interest for the next meeting,

·           Final definition of COBRAT balloons and submission to CNES for funding. Study the possibility of making infra-red observations (never made before) and that are of large interest to compare with model predictions.
