The main scientific goals that we will address are summarized below
I. Filling of the magnetosphere by ionospheric plasma
- What is the contribution of the ionosphere to the total magnetospheric mass, with respect to the SW?
- What are the main drivers of these contributions (outflows, winds, plumes)?
- What is the escape mass rate via dayside and magnetotail reconnection?
II. Implications of ionospheric plasma in Solar wind – magnetosphere coupling
- What is the abundance and variability of cold plasma at the magnetopause?
- How this variability affects the global reconnection rate between the solar wind and the magnetosphere?
- How important is cold plasma for the energy budget of magnetic reconnection?
III. Geotail dynamics under the presence of ionospheric plasma
- What role plays tail reconnection and the cold plasma energization associated to it in populating the plasma sheet and ring current?
- What microphysical effects introduce heavy ions and cold ions to the magnetospheric plasma processes?
- What are the effects of cold electrons in magnetospheric plasma processes?
