ISSI Visiting Scientists Programme
Scientific Rationale of the Project
Expected Output
Our project is devoted to the study of
methods for the solution of inverse problems in the field of Solar Physics.
In particular, our final goal will be to clarify the fundamental processes of
acceleration and transport of energetic particles during solar flares. The key
questions we want to address are
whether or not low energy cutoffs are present in the accelerated electron spectra;
what the acceleration mechanisms are (DC electric field out of a thermal population, Fermi acceleration and so on);
whether or not the thick target model for electron propagation is violated in some flares and what implications might have.
As far as the team composition is concerned,
the core is formed by scientists in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Mathematics (in
particular five members over eight come from ESA Member States). A robust
network of collaborations and interactions among the members already exists and
one of the goal of the project is certainly to strengthen this
multi-disciplinary collaboration.
The dissemination step of our scientific results will be based on:
the development of algorithms and software that will be eventually implemented inside the official RHESSI software;
the publication of papers on international refereed journals in the domain of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics;
the presentation of the obtained results during international conferences.
