The International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland invites applications for the 2025 Johannes Geiss Fellowship (JGF25). With this fellowship ISSI honours the memory of Johannes Geiss, the founder of ISSI, and his contributions to the space sciences.
The fellowship aims to attract internationally renowned scientists to make a significant contribution to the ISSI mission by pursuing ambitious independent research, in any of the disciplines that are part of ISSI’s core mission: Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Sciences and Earth Science.
The Johannes Geiss Fellow is expected to participate in ISSI activities and to collaborate with ISSI’s scientific staff and visitors, as well as with research institutes in Switzerland. The Johannes Geiss Fellow is invited to give public lectures in close collaboration with the Pro ISSI Association.
The JGF provides a stipend covering travel costs, an apartment for the duration of the stay and living expenses for a stay at ISSI Bern of up to 6 months. ISSI can host JGFs either for a single extended visit (e.g., during a sabbatical) or for several shorter duration visits.
The application (to be submitted as a single pdf-file) should comprise a cover letter (max. 2 pages), a brief outline of the research planned while at ISSI and possible collaborations with Swiss and/or other institutions (max. 3 pages), a curriculum vitae (max. 5 pages), a list of the 10 most relevant publications, and a declaration of availability for outreach activities.

The successful candidate should have received a Ph.D. within the last five year in the fields related to the space sciences of Astrophysics & Cosmology, Heliophysics and Plasma, and Planetary Sciences.
Successful candidates are expected to pursue their own independent research programme and to participate in ISSI’s research activities. They are encouraged to collaborate with the scientific staff of the Institute, and to interact with a large and diverse community of scientists from all over the world. ISSI provides the possibility to participate and/or lead an international team visiting ISSI. Additionally, cooperation with Swiss universities is strongly encouraged.
Salary and conditions of employment will be similar to those provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF salary ranges). Nationals from ESA Member States are especially encouraged to apply.
