Roland Hohensinn’s research underscores the importance of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in both long-term geophysical monitoring and rapid-response applications, contributing valuable insights to the field of natural hazard assessment.

Natural-Hazard Monitoring with GNSS

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are pivotal in monitoring natural hazards. Over the past three decades, GNSS has been a critical tool in tracking ground deformations and atmospheric changes, providing precise data on geophysical processes across various scales. Roland Hohensinn’s recent review in Advances in Geophysics highlights the applications of geodetic GNSS in detecting and understanding geological hazards like earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic activity, as well as severe weather events and ionospheric disturbances. The review also delves into the integration of GNSS with other sensors, advancements in low-cost GNSS technology, and the growing use of machine learning in GNSS-enabled hazard monitoring. Sensitivity of GNSS to Vertical Land Motion in Europe

To monitor the impact of natural hazards and global changes, the sensitivity of GNSS and GPS observations to vertical land motion across Europe is critical to understand as well as possible. Vertical land motion is, for example, a crucial factor for understanding climate change impacts like sea level rise. The research published in the Journal of Geodesy evaluates the effectiveness of correcting GPS displacement data with geophysical models and common-mode errors. Hohensinn and colleagues find a 14% to 24% improvement in station velocity sensitivity after corrections. As such, this work is a significant step towards achieving the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) goal of a reference frame stability of 0.1 mm/year.
