The Next 30 Years
From the Discovery of the First Exoplanet
An exciting evening of lectures by Michel Mayor and Doug Lin celebrating the 30th anniversary of the discovery of exoplanet 51 Pegasi b, followed by a panel discussion with audience participation and the opportunity to engage with the international experts during the following apéro.
The field of Exoplanet science is less than thirty years old, but the discovery that there are planets orbiting stars other than our Sun has revolutionized the way we see the Universe and our place in it. Since the first discovery, almost 6000 exoplanets have been found.
ISSI took this opportunity to bring the very latest news to the public by hosting two lectures followed a panel discussion with the scientific experts to debate fundamental open questions and the new insights into our search for life beyond the solar system.

The Surprising Expansion History of the Universe – Public Lecture by Nobel Laureate Adam Riess
Adam Guy Riess is an American astrophysicist and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the Johns Hopkins University and STScI. Prof. Riess is known for his research using supernovae as cosmic probes. His work contributed to the discovery of the universe’s accelerating expansion, earning him and his colleagues the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011.

Cosmic Beginnings
The new revolutionary observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), one of the most ambitious scientific experiments of the 21st century, are adding new energy to the debate on the beginning of the Universe, and are challenging our current understanding.
ISSI took this opportunity to bring the very latest news to the public by hosting a lecture followed a panel discussion with the scientific experts to debate fundamental open questions and the new insights into the chronology of the first Billion years of the Universe.
The event featured captivating talks by Susan Kassin and Pascal Oesch, and a lively ‘Cosmic beginnings’ panel discussion led by Jane Rigby with the two speakers, Alice Shapley, Willy Benz, and Claus Beisbart.
The event was related to the ISSI Breakthrough Workshop “The Chronology of the Very Early Universe According to JWST: The First Billion Years”: First-Billion Years.
