A groundbreaking new study led by Marta Marcos, Discipline Scientist at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI), has revealed that the number of extreme marine heatwave days has nearly tripled since the 1940s—a dramatic shift driven largely by human-induced climate change.
As ISSI welcomes four new Discipline Scientists in the coming months, we’re excited to introduce Rosita Kokotanekova, Martin Mlynczak, Marta Marcos, and Siyi Xu. These distinguished researchers bring expertise in planetary, atmospheric, oceanic, and exoplanetary sciences, furthering ISSI’s mission to foster international collaboration in and across the space sciences.
The project of ISSI Team 524 dives into how changes in the open ocean influence coastal sea levels. Through coastal altimetry, tide gauge data, and advanced model simulations, this research uncovers key insights on sea-level fluctuations that impact both local shores and broader coastal systems globally.
